I cannot find the words to express the overwhelming emotion that we all felt in San Francisco this week. The opportunity to be able to spend hours and hours touching and looking at "never-before-seen" artwork, notes, and sketches from Jerry was remarkable. Seeing his raw ideas, ideas that were in his mind and found their way onto his sketchpad...backstage or whenever he had inspiration - was a breathtaking experience. We stopped and just stared at each other almost every five minutes as we all held up work after work for the others to see. Each one a "guys you HAVE to see this" event...we are still talking about the works and will be for a very long time to come.
Artists pour their emotions and their deepest ideas onto the medium of their choice, and there is a closeness with them you can feel when you witness their creation. We want everyone to feel this closeness to Jerry - and this is why we strive to choose works for this collection that can make that happen.
As we begin Memorial Day Weekend 2017, we wanted to see if we could find a work from Jerry that was appropriate to share. It is unedited and raw, just the way we saw it for the first time a few days ago. It's more beautiful this way. You can feel the immediacy of the sketch and imagine Jerry creating it to express his feelings at the time;
That says it all doesn't it? Jerry knew it and felt it and spent a lifetime dedicated to it.
The world needs it now more than ever. Please share this simple symbol from Jerry with friends this weekend. From the man who symbolized peace and love and joy - Jerry Garcia.
